Definitions, background and details on key terms and challenges

Hill farming terms and sustainability definitions that could be useful.

Important terms and key words for our projects

The following are a few definitions and explanations behind terms used in the website and by the CIC. If you have other questions, please get in touch – your question is probably one that others are asking and we can develop this page with more answers.

Regenerative agriculture is an approach to food and farming that incorporates conservation and restoration. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, and increasing resilience to climate change.

The mapping of the information gathered by the CIC will be done electronically using the Land App. This is an independent approach to presenting complicated information and complex land issues in an easily interpreted and understood way.

To quote Land App: “Our mission is to help people make the right land use decisions through technology. We believe that bringing together data, people, knowledge and incentives in a modern and accessible online platform, we can collectively move towards smarter land use and start to address the major issues of our time.”

CCS is the broad term and can stand for Carbon Capture and Storage or Carbon Capture and Sequestration. Carbon capture describes how carbon dioxide (CO2) can be diverted from entering the atmosphere, either by transporting it or storing it elsewhere. Carbon sequestration can be either a natural or an artificial process by which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and held in solid or liquid form.

In the context of the West Lakeland Farmer-Led Nature Recovery CIC, CCS is about maintaining the levels of CO2 already in our soil and peat and building up that storage to reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere.

Herdwicks are one of three native sheep breeds for the fells of Cumbria (Swaledales and Rough Fell sheep are the others) and they have evolved to thrive on the higher Lake District fells. Not only are they hefted to their land, a vital element of commons grazing, but the ewes usually only have one lamb, sustainable in terms of the available grazing at lambing time.

CIC stands for Community Interest Company and it is a type of social enterprise. A CIC is a type of limited company which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders.
